Me Myself and I
Copyright Malcolm Dew-Jones
I'm just perambulating with myself for company
it's me myself and I a couple of fine feeling fellows for sure
and if you chance to see me as we're walking down the street
just be sure to understand exactly who you meet
there's old guys and new guys and some in between
the ones that you knew then and some yet unseen
each of us has maybe a turn for a day
my younger self hidden - but not gone away
I'm counting on the next guy to be entertaining me
I'm riding in his body and I wonder what I'll see
and always down the line I'm hoping I get something good
a body from the past that has been treated as I would
and each in his turn will then pass the torch along
ride out the journey hoping nothing will go wrong
each of us has maybe a turn for a day
my younger self hidden - but not gone away
I'm not sure I'm much wiser than the little kid inside
who tells me when it's time to play and when it's time to hide
I like to think I'm smarter but I think they disagree
they're waiting for a vote to come from several future me
there's mem'ries and futures and always a today
the living they're giving to the me now holding sway
each of us has maybe a turn for a day
my younger self hidden - but not gone away
I'm waiting baited breathe to see who'll be replacing me
I'll tell him where we came from and I'll hand him off the key
I hope it will unlock whatever mystery he finds
I'll warn him that when things are tough he's always of two minds
I trust him, I made him, I put him where he is
my soul surfs the moments that are mine and his
each of us has maybe a turn for a day
my older self hidden - till I meet home someday
